Rigid Polypropylene Tubes
Plastic netting in rigid tube form is used for center core support in filter cartridges. Rigid mesh tubes are also be used as an outer containment sleeve to protect filter media from damage during handling and cleaning. Extruded cores are common in all types of cartridge filtration elements. The ready availability of a wide range of configurations, and the minimal tooling costs associated with custom designs, make extruded cores a favorite for filter design engineers.
Rigid Mesh Tubes are created by flowing molten resin through die slots to create machine direction (MD) strands. Transverse direction (TD) stands connect to the machine direction strands, to form the hoop configuration. The molten tube slides over a sizing mandrel to form the desired inside diameter and create a relatively smooth inner surface.
Measurements & TolerancesTube diameters can vary slightly from lot-to-lot due to shrinkage variability. Inside Diameter (ID) and Outside Diameter (OD) tolerances are typically +/-0.020" for most configurations.
Rigid mesh tubes are available as extruded ("rough cut") with nominal length and square tolerance of +/-.25". To create custom lengths with more precise dimensions extruded tubes are cut on rotating spindles. Nominal "finished cut" tolerance is +/-0.030" for lengths less than 46 inches or +/-0.060" for lengths from 46 to 94 inches.
Spindles are typically sized 0.010" smaller than the minimum inside diameter of the extruded tube. Cutting blades can compress the tube causing the ends to be slightly out of square. Tolerances vary dependent on wall thickness and strand squareness.
Tolerance capabilities are impacted by tube diameter, wall thickness, strand configuration and cut length. Please consult your Industrial Netting representative for specific tolerances achievable on your tube.
